2020-2021 Pre-Kindergarten and Head Start Update

St. Mary’s County Public Schools is currently delivering all instruction virtually (Phase 1). This includes all students enrolled in Pre-Kindergarten 3, Pre-Kindergarten 4 and the Head Start Programs at Benjamin Banneker and Greenview Knolls Elementary Schools.

In adherence to Code of Maryland Regulations 13a.06.02.03, Pre-Kindergarten 4-year applicants who are from families with economically disadvantaged backgrounds or who are homeless will be admitted in the program as a Priority 1 student.

Pre-Kindergarten applications who are not from families with economically disadvantaged backgrounds (Priority 2) are placed on a waitlist.  Priority 2 students will remain on the waitlist throughout Phase 1.  When SMCPS enters Phase 2, Pre-Kindergarten programs that can accommodate social distancing guidelines and have seat capacity, the admittance of Priority 2/waitlisted students will be revisited.

A. A local school system shall enroll in prekindergarten all 4-year-old applicants who are from families with economically disadvantaged backgrounds or who are homeless.

B. For vacancies remaining after compliance with §A of this regulation a local school system may enroll 4-year-old applicants who are not from families with economically disadvantaged backgrounds but who represent a student population that exhibits a lack of school readiness.
