New Teacher Orientation

Welcome!

The Induction program will include several different ways in which you will receive support, including site-based mentors and monthly opportunities to meet with and learn from others. The program will begin with New Teacher Orientation, Wednesday, August 9, through Friday, August 11, 2023.  Orientation will take place at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center and your school-site location.

In addition, we will offer optional professional development with our Extended Orientation Sessions on August 14-15, 2023.

Orientation Sessions

The district-wide support starts with New Teacher Orientation on August 9-11, 2023. This three-day event is a required professional development program that includes the opportunity to meet the superintendent, content supervisors, and other central office staff who are available to answer questions and share information. During this time, you will also be provided time at your school site to meet your administration, your mentor, and have time to prepare your classroom and curriculum.

  • Wednesday-Friday, August 9-11, 2023, 8:00 AM through 3:30 PM
    Day 1: August 9, 2023 - @ your School
    Day 2 & 3: August 10-11, 2023 - @ Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center

  • Dress: Business casual

  • Bring your SMCPS-Issued laptop and iPad (This will be issued to you at your school on August 9 if you have not already been issued one)

Extended Orientation meetings

Optional professional learning opportunities will be provided for newly hired teachers after orientation and before teachers report to schools. The sessions will be held in person at Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center on Monday, August 14, 2023, and Tuesday, August 15, 2023. Each session will be 90 minutes in length beginning at 8:00 AM, 10:15 AM, and 1:00 PM. New hires can attend a variety of sessions, including:

  • Bridges Training for Elementary Mathematics

  • Behavior 101 - Setting Up for Success

  • Google Tools

  • Schoology Level 1 and 2

  • Lesson Planning Workshop

  • Special Education:  Planning for and Participating in IEP Meetings

  • Special Education:  Commonly Used Standardized Assessments

  • Special Education:  IEP Writing
