Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a layered approach to securing login access. It is a system that requires a user to present a combination of two or more different authenticators (such as passwords and passcodes sent to other devices) to verify a user’s identity for login.  SMCPS Staff most likely already use MFA when signing in to other programs, such as your online bank account.

MFA increases security because if one authenticator becomes compromised, unauthorized users will be unable to meet the second authentication requirement and will not be able to access the targeted system.

MFA requires users to present two or more authentication factors at login to verify their identity before they are granted access. Each additional authentication factor added to the login process increases security.

Currently, Clever administration panels, and SMCPS accounts for Administrators and Supervisors are required for MFA. Staff are able to utilize the Microsoft MFA app on their SMCPS iPad, therefore there is no need to worry about personal devices being used for professional duties. The Microsoft MFA will eventually include other such applications such as Gmail, eFinance, EAC, and RingCentral. 

Again, staff are able to utilize the Microsoft Authenticator app already pushed to all Staff SMCPS iPads to setup MFA for use with these applications and more. There will be no need to use your personal devices for professional duties outside of personal preference.

If you are locked out of your account, you will need to put in an IT service desk ticket (formerly Helpdesk) to get your account unlocked. Recognizing that this may not be possible if you are locked out, please work with someone in your building to put the ticket in for you, ensuring they have added your information in the detail section.
