Title I & Family Engagement

The Department of Title I and Family Engagement has oversight for the following programs, grants, and resources:

Title I, Part A

This is a federally funded program for economically disadvantaged children. We serve four elementary schools in the Lexington Park corridor, including George Washington Carver Elementary School, Green Holly Elementary School, Lexington Park Elementary School, and Park Hall Elementary School. Learn more about Title I.

Equitable Services for Title I Non-Public Schools

The Elementary and Secondary Act (ESEA) was reauthorized in December 2015 as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and includes separate provisions governing equitable services for eligible private school students, teachers, and other educational personnel, and families.

School Improvement

Title I, Part A, Section 1003(a) school improvement funds are derived from a reservation based on the state’s total Title I, Part A allocation from the United States Department of Education. The grant is non-competitive, and Local Education Agency (LEA) allocations are based on the identification of the schools within the LEA. The funds awarded under this grant are intended to provide additional support to schools identified by the Maryland State Department of Education for Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) and Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI) as defined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Section 1111(c)(4)(D)(i).

Educational Equity

Each Maryland public school will provide every student equitable access to the educational rigor, resources, and supports that are designed to maximize the student’s academic success and social-emotional learning (COMAR 13a.01.06.01). Resources are intended to support students’ diverse needs regardless of their ability (cognitive, social/emotional, and physical), ethnicity, family structure, gender identity, language, national origin, nationality, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or other individual characteristics.
