Physical Education
Physical Education aims to provide students with a developmentally appropriate and personally challenging program that advances the knowledge, confidence, and motivation needed to engage in a lifelong, healthy, active lifestyle. Physical Education provides students with opportunities to learn motor skills, develop fitness, work alongside others and gain an understanding of the importance of physical activity.
The Maryland Standards reflect SHAPE America’s National Standards with regards to what students should know and do. The abilities of a physically literate individual include demonstrating competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns; applying knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance; demonstrating the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness; exhibiting responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others; and recognizing the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.
