eLearning Enrollment
SMCPS eLearning Opportunities
Credits for Graduation:
Students are encouraged to present more than the minimum units of credit for graduation. Most students will graduate with more than 26 units of credit. Units of credit are earned at the end of the year with a passing score. A unit of credit is based on all four marking periods for a year-long course. All credits required for graduation must be taken at an SMCPS high school to fulfill graduation requirements unless otherwise noted in the Program of Studies.
St. Mary's County Public Schools (SMCPS) understands that digital learning is a way to individualize student learning opportunities. Online learning opportunities are available for original credit, credit recovery, quarterly recovery, and unit recovery in blended learning environments. Online learning or eLearning provides an opportunity for students to take a course when enrollment is too low to assign a teacher to a traditional classroom. Blended learning environments incorporate both face-to-face and online learning. Technology and digital resources are employed to improve student productivity and learning as well as extend the "learning day."
Only students enrolled in St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS) may participate in SMCPS digital learning courses provided through Edgenuity. The exception to this requirement is students enrolled in the Pathway to Graduation program. Prior to enrollment in any digital learning original credit course, students must submit a completed SMCPS Student Participation Agreement. School Counselors are responsible for securing the completed agreement.
SMCPS offers online learning opportunities as alternatives for gaining original credit or recovery credit for classes in which students did not receive credit. All online learning is aligned to the MD Common Core Standards. Courses for original must be offered through an approved vendor who meets the requirements established by MSDE.
St. Mary’s County Public Schools utilizes Edgenuity as the platform for digital courses. Edgenuity’s academic curriculum provides standards-based courses in math, science, English, social studies, world languages, electives, and Advanced Placement.
