LEONARDTOWN, MD – St. Mary's Association of Student Councils (SMASC) held elections for the Student Member of the St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS) Board of Education position, and Lillian Kibler was elected. Lillian is an eleventh-grade student at Leonardtown High School and in the Academy of Global International Studies. Lillian will replace the current Student Member of the Board, Manasa Iswara, from Leonardtown High School, on July 1, 2023.

Lillian has held multiple student leadership positions. For instance, she is the current First Vice-President of SMASC and the Secretary-General of St. Mary's Association of Model United Nations. Both are centralized leadership positions. Also, Lillian is an active member of her school's Student Council and National Honor Society. Mr. James Copsey, III, the principal of Leonardtown High School, described Lillian as "respectful, hardworking, and trustworthy." Also, Mr. Copsey expressed that Lillian's "leadership and work ethic are admirable." Ms. Tracy Harding, the Social Studies Department Chair, and the 2019 Washington Post Teacher of the Year for SMCPS stated Lillian "will be a voice for all stakeholders as the student representative on the Board of Education." Mr. Copsey and Ms. Harding asserted Lillian's commitment to staying informed of matters and willingness to engage in dialogue would propel her to advocate for all students enrolled in SMCPS.

When Lillian assumes this elected leadership position, her focus will be amplifying students' voices and working with the Board of Education members to ensure students have a say in the decision-making process. This will entail staying informed on state and local education-related matters and collaborating with multiple partners vested in the SMCPS community. More importantly, Lillian wants to be a change agent that will improve the learning experience for all students and continue SMCPS's relentless drive to establish a vibrant academic culture.

Lillian will become an official member of the Board of Education and provide an informed student viewpoint to the Board. While serving as the Student Member of the Board, Lillian will share information on various educational concerns with students and the community. This student leadership position also includes actively participating in student-related and school-related activities.
