LEONARDTOWN, MD – At 1:00 PM today, it was reported that a student was confronted with a knife in a restroom at Great Mills High School. There were no injuries but the investigation did reveal the weapon. The investigation is ongoing and the suspect was identified and taken into custody by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office. 

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, and Great Mills High School Administration and Safety and Security personnel are cooperating fully. Out of respect for student privacy and the ongoing investigation, we are unable to share additional identifying details at this time. Please be assured that appropriate actions are being taken in accordance with school district policies and local law enforcement.

We remain committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all members of our school community.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Department has issued alerts and updates on its social media sites throughout the investigation. Links to those sites can be found on their Media Page. Families of GMHS students were sent a letter by Principal Dothard informing them of the incident and summarizing supports available for students.
