WHY HAVE A WELLNESS POLICY?
The Child Nutrition and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Reauthorization Act of 2004 required by law that all LEAs participating in the National School Lunch Program or other child nutrition programs create local school wellness policies.
WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS?
The student policy for SMCPS involves sections which relate to the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Model. These are Health Education; Food and Nutrition Services; Social and Emotional School Climate; Physical Environment; Health Services; Counseling, Psychological and Social Services; Community Involvement; Family Engagement; and Physical Education and Physical Activity. (Employee Wellness is addressed by a different Policy).
WHY ASSESS COMPLIANCE?
The United States Department of Agriculture has clarified that the policy has to be assessed regularly to determine if there is compliance with the policy and to see what progress is being made to attaining the goals of the local policy/regulation. This information is to be communicated to the public.
