Asbestos Hazardous Emergency Response Act (AHERA)

ST. MARY’S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Department of Operations

The Department of Operations is responsible for ensuring that St. Mary's County Public Schools is in compliance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), enacted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1986. This act established comprehensive legislation designed to address the presence and management of asbestos in schools nationwide. A major component of our adherence to this legislation is the development and maintenance of an AHERA Management Plan for each SMCPS school and administration building. This Management Plan entails inspections, periodic surveillance reports, response actions, public notification, and training relating to the management of asbestos in our schools.

A copy of each plan is currently available via Google Drive to SMCPS staff. Files are organized by location, then chronologically for each site. This file on Google Drive is now the official resource for AHERA information relating to SMCPS.

Should you have a faculty member, member of the community, or anyone else inquire about asbestos in our schools, our AHERA Management Plan, or anything else relative, please refer them to Ashley Varner or Stacey Suite in the Operations Department and we will provide the appropriate information and/or training required by law.

Please contact me with any questions regarding this change to our AHERA information plan, or any other related issue.
