What is the National Academy of Finance?
The National Academy of Finance is a School of Business Finance and Management. The Academy offers students opportunities to create an impressive portfolio of skills. The students develop professional skills, receive specialized instruction in business finance and management, and gain an awareness of the marketable skills needed to be successful in the field. The students may also acquire practical experience via field trips, internship opportunities, and course projects. The program of study for the Academy represents a partnership between the Maryland State Department of Education and the National Academy Foundation.

Where will NAOF be housed?

The National Academy of Finance will be housed at Chopticon High School.

What grade levels will be included in NAOF?

The National Academy of Finance begins in 9th grade and runs through 12th grade.

Who can attend NAOF?
Any student can apply. Students who apply should have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and should have completed Algebra and/or Pre-AP/Honors level English in middle school.

What is the structure of the academic day? How does this program differ from other high school programs?
NAOF students take the same courses as other high school students. In 9th grade, their honors level English class contains special finance related projects and readings.
Additionally, NAOF students complete either a series of four financed based classes (Principles of Finance & Applied Finance; Principles of Accounting & Managerial
Accounting; Business in a Global Economy & Business Ethics; and Financial Planning & Services) or three of these classes and an internship during the summer between their junior and senior years.

Are internships required? Are internships paid?
Internships are not required; they are an option. Some internships are paid, while others
are strictly volunteer.

Can a student be in NAOF and also attend the James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center (JAFCTC)?
Yes, with some very careful scheduling, some NAOF students take part in both NAOF and JAFCTC or JAFROTC. It is a challenge and depends on the specific program
requirements at JAFCTC, but it can be done.

Can NAOF students take classes at CSM?
Yes, many upperclassmen take dual enrollment classes at CSM.

Is NAOF only for students pursuing a college degree or career in business?
Many NAOF students want to pursue careers in fields other than business. Some want to be doctors/dentists/physical therapists. Others want to be self-employed. Some
want to be teachers. The goals of NAOF students are greatly varied. The one thing NAOF students have in common is that they understand that a solid background in
finance is beneficial in every career field.

Will transportation be provided?
Yes, bus transportation will be provided. Students will be transported from hub stops to and from Chopticon each day. Detailed transportation information will not be fully
available until students are selected and enrolled into the NAOF program. After finalizing the acceptance lists, we will provide you with a transportation plan. Parents may also choose to transport their children to and from the NAOF if that is more convenient.

What technology will NAOF students have access to on a regular basis?
The NAOF site is equipped with state of the art technology including SMART technology, laptop computers, desktops, iPads, and financial software.

When will the selection of students for NAOF be made?
Applications will be open online in early March. Students and their families will be notified by early May. At that point, there will be more information and specific
orientation nights, transportation information, opportunities to meet the teacher(s), etc. available to accepted students. For students not admitted to the program, they will
remain on the waitlist.

What about school-based extracurricular activities such as sports, dances, clubs, etc.?
