Apply to our academic academies

Please read the following terms and conditions regarding the 2021-2022 Pathways Application process.

  • All online applications must be completed and submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Friday,  May 7, 2021.  No applications will be accepted after that date.  There will be NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Applicants will be notified regarding acceptance status via the contact email address provided on this application by Friday, May 21, 2021. Please make sure your email address is valid and can accept messages from an SMCPS address.

All applicants must have at least ONE recommendation on file.

Current STEM 5 and STEM 8 students do not need a teacher recommendation to continue in STEM. Current STEM 8 students need teacher recommendations to complete their applications to all other academy programs. 

Requesting a Recommendation

Applicants are responsible for providing the recommending party with a "Academies & Pathways Recommendation Request" form. Please print & fill out the form, and give it to your recommending teacher when you ask them for their recommendation. It has information they will need.

Application Information

Applicants will complete the online application with a parent/guardian. Applicants will also include a brief essay describing their reasons for wanting to enter AoF. A teacher recommendation from an English, Social Studies, or Math teacher is required.

Applicants will sit for a common assessment at their home middle school the week of May 10-14, 2021.

Additional factors may also be considered to include attendance, other grades, and local assessments, placement in Accelerated coursework, teacher recommendations, involvement in extra-curricular and volunteer activities, and/or student-written essay.

The Academy of Finance, housed at Chopticon High School, is a School of Business Finance and Management. Academy students develop professional skills, receive specialized instruction in business finance and management, and gain an awareness of the marketable skills needed to be successful in the field. The students may also acquire practical experience via field trips, internship opportunities, and course projects. 

Unique learning experiences unique to the AOF include the opportunity to earn college credit through AP courses and/or dual-enrollment as well as the opportunity to work with a skilled and knowledgeable Program Advisory Council, a group of business and community partners that mentor the students. Students develop the transferable skills (analytical, technical, presentation, higher-order thinking, problem-solving, and communication) that are paramount to college and career success as well as success in business-related fields.
