In addition to the already robust elementary program that encourages higher level thinking and challenge, St. Mary's County Public Schools formally screens all students in grade 3 and new students in grades 4 and 5 for gifted identification. Students who are identified as Intellectually Gifted in reading and/or mathematics receive more formalized instruction appropriate to their learning needs as a part of their school day.
