HSA Assessments:

The Maryland High School Assessments (HSAs) are a series of end-of-course exams that test student knowledge of Core Learning Goals (CLGs) established by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Students participate in four required subject area tests:

  • Algebra/Data Analysis (Replaced by PARCC Algebra I in the 2014-15 School Year)
  • English 10 (Replaced by PARCC English 10 in the 2014-15 School Year)
  • American Government
  • Biology

Algebra I and English 10 HSAs have been replaced by the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessments.

Based on the transition to the PARCC assessments for Algebra I and English 10, and the phase in of the HSA Government assessment,

Assessment graduation requirements:

Students graduating in the 2015-2016 who entered 9th grade in the 2013 - 2014 school year or earlier must have:

  • Passed Biology HSA
  • American Government HSA is not required for graduation
  • Participated in Algebra I PARCC or Algebra I HSA
  • Participated in English 10 PARCC or English 10 HSA

Students graduating in 2016-2017 school year must have:

  • Pass Biology HSA
  • Pass American Government HSA
  • Participated in Algebra I PARCC or Algebra I HSA
  • Participated in English 10 PARCC or English 10 HSA

Students enrolled in American Government, Biology, Algebra I or English 10 in the 2016-17 school year and beyond must:

  • Pass Government HSA
  • Pass Biology HSA
  • Pass PARCC Algebra I
  • Pass PARCC English 10
