Reading Language Arts - Elementary

Saint Mary’s County Public Schools utilizes the Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards for Reading, Writing, Language, Speaking and Listening as the foundation for Elementary Reading and Language Arts instruction.  Students advancing through the grades are expected to meet each year’s grade-specific standards and retain or further develop skills and understandings mastered in preceding grades.

The ability of children to read on grade level is essential for their success in school.  Reading is the most valuable tool students learn as they grow, progress, and build the foundation for lifelong learning. Instruction will focus on phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students will receive exposure to a range of texts and tasks in order to develop these skills and foster a love of reading. A strong emphasis will be placed on writing. The ability to write well is a skill which permeates the curriculum.  Each year through their writing, students will demonstrate increasing sophistication in all aspects of language and vocabulary use as they apply what they have learned.
