Health Education

Comprehensive Health Education provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to be healthy throughout their lifetime. The intent of a comprehensive health education program is to motivate students to maintain and improve their health, prevent disease, and avoid or reduce health related risk behaviors.

The Maryland Health Education State Curriculum weaves the skills from the National Standards into seven content standards:

Mental and Emotional Health; Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs; Personal and Consumer Health; Family Life and Human Sexuality; Safety and Injury Prevention; Nutrition and Fitnessand Disease Prevention and Control.

Students have a unit of Health Education in the elementary school taught by their classroom teacher.  In the middle and high schools a marking period/semester course is taught by the Health Education/Physical Education teacher respectively.
