Gifted & Talented

What is Gifted and Talented?

Gifted and talented students are found in all schools and represent all cultural, ethnic, and economic groups. These learners have outstanding talent and perform, or show the potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with other students of a similar age. They may excel in specific academic fields, have an unusual leadership capacity, or have a high-performance capacity in intellectual, creative, or artistic areas.

In St. Mary’s County Public Schools, we recognize that gifted and talented students think and learn differently. They have unique abilities, interests, and needs which can only be addressed through differentiating the regular curriculum and designing specialized programs and services. Through a variety of acceleration and enrichment opportunities, gifted learners in St. Mary’s County are provided the support they need to meet their unique learning needs.
