The General Counsel provides legal advice and counsel to the Board of Education, Superintendent, Central Office-based and school level staff in the following areas:
  • special education and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
  • student issues
  • FERPA and the Public Information Act
  • charter school law
  • Title IX
  • contract, lease, memorandum of understanding (MOU) drafting and review
  • administrative, state, and federal litigation
  • labor relations

Suja Varghese, Esq. holds a Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Maryland, School of Law, and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Prior to joining SMCPS, Ms. Varghese served as an Assistant County Attorney in the Baltimore County Government Office of Law.
