Deputy Superintendent of Schools
Dr. J.R. Beavers is a seasoned educational leader with over two decades of experience spanning classroom instruction, school administration, district leadership, and organizational management. Currently serving as the Deputy Superintendent of Schools for St. Mary’s County Public Schools, he brings a comprehensive approach to educational excellence, strategic planning, and operational efficiency.
Before assuming his current position, Dr. Beavers served as the Director of Maintenance for St. Mary’s County Public Schools, where he successfully reduced the maintenance backlog, enhanced departmental culture, and improved facilities management processes. His previous roles within SMCPS include principal of Dynard Elementary School, assistant principal at Lexington Park Elementary, and 5th-grade teacher at Dynard Elementary.
Dr. Beavers joined SMCPS in 2014 from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in Charlotte, NC, where he held positions such as 5th-grade teacher at Highland Creek Elementary, Dean of Students at Highland Creek Elementary, and Assistant Principal at Ridge Road Middle School.
Raised in Calvert County, he began his teaching career in 1997 at Plum Point Middle School as a Technology Education Teacher. He later served as Dean of Students at Northern Middle School.
Dr. Beavers holds a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, where he received the prestigious Charles L. Faires Dissertation of Distinction Award. His academic journey also includes a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Maryland College and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Bowie State University.
