PRESS RELEASE

Maryland Physical Education Demonstration School

HOLLYWOOD , MD -- Hollywood Elementary School has been selected as a Maryland Physical Education Demonstration School for 2009-2011.  This recognition is awarded to schools whose physical education programs are considered to be exemplary, and thus model programs in the state. Hollywood Elementary School first obtained demonstration status for 2007-2009.

On May 4, 2009, a three-person school visitation team, comprised of professional physical educators from other Maryland school systems, conducted an onsite visit to assess the school’s application and the overall physical education program.  Applicants are to include three Exemplary Features, and provide evidence of Quality Teaching; Philosophy; Organization and Administration; Curriculum and Planning; Assessment and Evaluation; Professionalism; and Facilities, Equipment, and Supplies.

Ms. Mary Kaye Roper and Ms. Trish Tillotson developed a physical education program that the Visitation Team described as a Model Program.  Ms. Charmain Sutherland, the visitation team captain from Anne Arundel County , commented on how beneficial it would be for anyone “that visits Hollywood to see such an exemplary program.”   Ms. Roper and Ms. Tillotson are to be commended on this outstanding achievement and we hope that many physical education teachers from across the state will choose to visit the school to witness outstanding instruction and a commitment to providing students with the skills and knowledge needed to be physically active for a lifetime.
