School Health Services

Program Description: The school health program endeavors to safeguard and promote the health of the entire school community. To fully access educational opportunities students need to be in school, healthy and ready to learn. The school health program is a public partnership between St. Mary's County Public Schools and St. Mary's County Health Department. Program emphasis is directed toward prevention of disease and promotion of positive health through:
  • Health services
  • Health counseling
  • Health education
  • Health services are provided by school nurses assigned to each school. The school nurse is an experienced health professional who is a registered nurse with education beyond a basic nursing program. Licensed practical nurses are assigned to some schools and work in a team relationship with the school nurse. The school nurse functions as part of the pupil services team to bridge the gap between health and wellness and education and learning.
