Superintendent's Leadership Development Academy

The Superintendent’s Leadership Development Academy is held July 28 - Aug 1, 2008 for SMCPS leaders, with follow-up sessions held monthly throughout the school year. Professional development through this program will be differentiated for the following groups:

  • Aspiring Leaders or Teacher Leaders, who may be in teacher positions as teacher leaders at their school, but may also include those other instructional positions (e.g., IRT), and others who have aspirations for further growth as an instructional leader;
  • Assistant Principals, who are developing and extending leadership skills;
  • Central Office Instructional Supervisors, Specialists, or Coordinators, who lead programs; and
  • New Leaders, who may be in their first years as an administrator (e.g., principal, assistant principal, supervisor).
  • Application

This program will be designed to develop skills and competencies for instructional leadership and explore the experiences needed to be effective leaders. Active learning will be designed to help leaders understand what it is to be an instructional leader, what roles an administrator plays in the position, and the expectations for success. Therefore, the Superintendent’s Leadership Development Academy will ensure that participants:

  • Develop an understanding of the role and responsibilities of an instructional leader;
  • Develop an understanding of the expectations for instructional leadership in St. Mary’s County Public Schools;
  • Develop skills for facilitating leadership practices and change initiatives for a program or school;
  • Investigate practices and develop skills for purposeful observation of instruction to increase student achievement; and
  • Identify goals for personal and professional development in terms of instructional leadership and apply new understandings of instructional leadership.

Beyond this summer academy, the Leadership Development Program is a full-year program.  There will be two-hour follow up meetings monthly throughout the school year (tentatively on the first Thursday of each month).  Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive three (3) MSDE Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits.
