Substitute Employees
Substitute teachers are hired to teach students in the absence of a teacher, on
a daily or long-term basis. Preferred applicants have had
some experience in working with children.
Substitutes are paid every two weeks during the school year, based upon the
number of days worked. A substitute for a secretary or a paraeducator is
paid $55 per day. A substitute teacher without a bachelor's degree is paid
$55 and a substitute teacher with a degree is paid $65 per day. A
substitute teacher who is a retiree from SMCPS or within the state of Maryland
is paid $75 per day.

- Be at home when school is not in session.
- Maintain your status as a full-time teacher applicant.
- Earn extra money while you are working part-time elsewhere.
Substitute teacher applicants are required to take the Substitute Teacher Training Course
offered through St. Mary’s County Public Schools. There is no fee for the
course. The course is currently being offered monthly and is subject to
change. St. Mary's County Public Schools requires all employees to have a
full background check including state and FBI. The fee for a background check is
$42.The schedule
below is for the 2008-2009 Substitute Teacher Training Registration and
Classes. Each Substitute Teacher Training Class will consist of a
two-day course. A Proficiency Screening Examination is a mandatory
requirement prior to registration. To schedule an appointment for the
proficiency screening examination, please call the Department or Human Resources

Registration and classes will be held at the Board of Education Office Building
on 23160 Moakley Street, Leonardtown, Maryland.
Registration
begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. Please note, late arrivals will not be permitted
for the registration session. Additional information can be obtained by calling
301-475-5511 ext. 189.
Applicants must adhere to the following:
- Applicants must apply in person.
- Applicants must be 18 years of age.
- Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Applicants are required to bring a social security card, passport, or birth certificate, and a
driver’s license, and $42.00 (check, cash, or money order) for a criminal
background fee. Checks and/or money orders are preferred and should be made
payable to SMCPS (St. Mary’s County Public Schools).
- Applicant will schedule a fingerprint appointment on the day of registration.
- Failure to report on time and have appropriate processing information may result in applicant
being placed on a waiting list for that month’s classes.

Essential Job Functions of Substitute Teachers

Assumes all duties
and responsibilities of the regular teacher in a given day. Long-term
substitutes may also be required to attend staff meetings, parent conferences,
etc.

Maintains effective
working relationships with other employees and the public and deals with the
public relations problems courteously and tactfully.
- Carries out written
plans left by the regular teacher for the day's lessons and routines.
Marks pupil
assignments and classroom work according to school and teacher evaluation
policies.
- Records pupil
absences according to school procedures.
- Assumes the teacher's
responsibility for supervision of students in the building, on the grounds, or
on field trips.
- Becomes familiar with
and follows school and division procedures for routines and emergencies.
- Leaves a clear,
written summary for the teacher of the work covered and other relevant comments.
- During planning
period, performs duties as requested by teacher or school administrator.
- Maintains
confidentiality at all times: in classroom, school site, administrative
buildings and in the community.
