Sick Leave Bank

The Sick Leave Bank (SLB) was established in 2002 as a resource for employees who require extended sick leave beyond the number of days they have accumulated.  Since that time, more than 1,000 days have been granted to employees with conditions that meet the eligibility requirements.

Participation in the SLB is voluntary.  Any employee who is eligible to earn leave, and has a sick leave balance of at least ten days, may join.  The open enrollment period for the SLB is held each September.  Employees will be notified prior to September of open enrollment by the Department of Human Resources.  Current members of the SLB do not need to complete an application each year. Upon receipt of your completed "Authorization Form for Sick Leave Bank Donation," one day of sick leave will be deducted from your sick leave balance one time only - not each year.  Employees are not eligible to join while receiving Worker's Compensation or disability benefits.

A member must be employed by SMCPS for a minimum of three months before they are eligible to apply for benefits.  Any employee who is on an approved leave of absence, or is on suspension, is not eligible to receive benefits. Benefits may be used for incapacitating injuries, illnesses, or quarantines that are considered to be prolonged or catastrophic and which are not likely to permanently disable the employee.  Normal pregnancies and childbirth are not conditions where an employee would receive benefits of the SLB.  Prior utilization of all sick, personal, and annual leave is required.

Benefits are for use during the regular scheduled duty days of the member and may not be carried over from one school year to the next.  All unused benefit days will be returned to the bank.  Employees may not engage in secondary employment or receive Worker's Compensation or disability benefits while using sick leave bank benefits.  A member may be granted up to 100 days of sick leave in a school year with a maximum of no more than 200 days in any five year period.  Once an employee becomes eligible for disability retirement, all SLB benefits cease.
