Social StudiesModel United
Nations The St. Mary's Association of Model United Nations sponsors a simulation of the United Nations whereby students act as delegates from countries around the world. The simulation session falls over two days in the spring, during which delegates serve on committees, such as the Economic and Social Council and the Security Council, to discuss topics like world poverty, rain forest depletion, and nuclear weapons. Participants write their own resolutions, debate with other countries, and compromise for a common solution, leading to passage of their resolutions. Sometimes there is an opportunity to use their skills at an accelerated pace in the tension of a simulated crisis, such as a terrorist action or nuclear accident. High school students provide leadership, while fifth grade students serve as pages. St. Mary’s Association of Model United Nations (SMAMUN) May 16-17, 2008 at Chopticon High School
