Program Data:
The acquisition and use of information is essential when determining the future of program offerings for any school system. In this department, data is critical to the establishment of any new program as well as the closing of programs. Currently, the Career and Technology Education staff is aggressively pursuing local, state and regional labor market trend data. This information should provide the direction for new programs in St. Mary’s County in Career and Technology studies. Our goal is to use accurate data to guide us in the planning and implementation of cutting-edge, relevant programs. Once the review is complete, decisions will be made regarding ‘new programs’ in the county. Of course, many factors contribute to the establishment of new programs such as, budget, classroom or laboratory space, enrollment, etc. All of these will be assessed as part of the program review process.
Another use of data is the evaluation of program performance. The Maryland State Department of Education provides assistance to each county with several surveys and assessment tools to perform this task. Each year there is a report which is entitled: ‘Career and Technology Education Standards and Measures’. This information provides a description of performance for each county in Maryland. The focus is on students involved with Career and Technology Education programs. However, Career and Technology Education students are compared with the performance of College Prep students. Assessments are provided in three areas:
1. Student transition to employment, training and/or post-secondary education
Data Source:
Department of Business and Economic Development, Unemployment data
Maryland State Department of Education, Graduate follow-up survey
2. Performance in the Workplace
Data Source:
Maryland State Department of Education, Graduate follow-up survey
3. Performance in College
Data Source:
Maryland Higher Education Commission, Student Outcomes and Achievement Report
Within these assessments are questions on surveys that solicit responses from employers as to how well students are doing on the job. The responses to the survey questions provide a clear profile of overall satisfaction by employers in regards to student performance in the workplace. These surveys are prepared by employers. The distribution and collection are conducted by the Cooperative Education teachers in our county. This data is available in the Division of Instruction at the Loveville office.
