FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES
The middle school Family and Consumer Sciences program is designed to contribute to the
development of the student by exploring the nature and impact of personal and family relationships, food
and nutrition, personal health, child development, fashion/personal image, use of technology/computers,
and career exploration.
The focus of Family and Consumer Sciences is the family. This includes the knowledge of family
systems, relationships, and roles within the community, and society. This instructional experience
provides students with skills to make better, more informed decisions regarding consumer choices that
impact both personal and family life.
Maryland State Competencies for Family and Consumer Sciences
1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationships among individuals, family, and society in order to make decisions, which are in the best interest of self, family, and society.
2. Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills regarding resource management, living environments, child development, food and nutrition, fashion design/trends, and personal health in order to make effective life decisions.
3. Students will solve practical problems using critical and creative thinking in order to achieve personal, family, and societal goals.
4. Students will apply new knowledge and experiences in order to identify, explore, and prepare for potential careers.
5. Students will demonstrate an understanding of current and emerging technologies and their impact on both personal and family life.
6. Students will demonstrate knowledge of diverse populations in order to be sensitive to and interact appropriately with others.
7. Students will apply concepts and skills from reading/language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and other disciplines to solve real-life problems.
8. Students will use computers to prepare documents, organize data, prepare presentations, and conduct research for a variety of purposes.
Course Description for Family and Consumer Sciences
GRADE 8
Family and Consumer Sciences
will provide students with an in-depth study of self, familyissues, personal relationships, food and nutrition, personal health, fashion trends, child development,
emerging technologies for the home and workplace, and career options. This course will also offer
extensive use of computers for document preparation, databases, spreadsheets, and presentations.
Students will use computers to conduct menu planning, nutrition analysis, diet management, consumer
research, and housing/interior design. Also included will be opportunities to conduct practical and
authentic research through independent study topics in food and nutrition, child development, or fashion
design. Students will apply new knowledge and skills to real-life situations in order to enhance their
understanding of family, career, and societal roles.
