The regular meeting of the Board of Education of St. Mary’s County was held on Wednesday,

August 30, 2006, in the Board of Education Meeting Room, 23160 Moakley Street, Leonardtown.  The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Dr. Salvatore L. Raspa, chairman.  Board members present for the meeting were:

Motion to Enter Into Executive Session

Mr. Kessler made a motion that the Board enter into executive session to discuss personnel and property acquisition issues (Article 24, Section 4-210(a)1,11).  Ms. Allen seconded the motion.  Motion carried unanimously.

 

Reopen Regular Session

Dr. Raspa reconvened the regular meeting at 6:01 p.m.  The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

 

Approval of Agenda

Mr. Kessler made a motion to approve the agenda as presented.  Ms. Allen seconded the motion.  Motion carried unanimously.

Reports

.Ms. Thurston noted that 11 Laps to Remember will be held at LHS on September 11, 2006, the cost is $5.00 to walk and The LHS Parade is on October 13, 2006.

.Mr. Kessler noted his attendance at the First Day of School visits and the All Hands on Deck event, commenting how much fun he had at this event and that there was so much enthusiasm from everyone at the event.

.Ms Allen noted her attendance at the Fire and Rescue Appreciation Day, New Teacher Orientation at LHS, Crab Feast for New Teachers, All Hands on Deck, EASMC/CEASMC Meet and Greet, BOE/BOCC joint meeting on new rules affecting accounting for benefits (GASB 45), First Day of

School visits to Leonardtown Middle School (LMS), LHS, Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center, Dynard Elementary School (DES) and Mechanicsville Elementary School (MES), Board of Education Retreat, Bay District Volunteer Fire Department Dedication of New Fire Station, and the First Missionary Baptist Church and SMCPS After School Tutorial Kick-Off Program.

.Ms. Washington noted her attendance at the 11-Month School Science Fair, “The Project” play at Great Mills High School (GMHS), New Teacher Orientation at LHS, Crab Feast for New Teachers, All Hands on Deck, BOE/BOCC joint meeting, First Day of School visits to Green Holly Elementary School (GHES), Esperanza Middle School (EMS), and Lexington Park Elementary School (LPES), Political Candidate Forum: President of the Board of County Commissioners and Sheriff, Political Candidate Forum: Judges and Delegates, Board of Education Retreat, Oasis of Victory Program and Kick-Off of School Year, Bay District Volunteer Fire Department Dedication of New Fire Station, First Missionary Baptist Church and SMCPS After School Tutorial Kick-Off Program, and Secretary Kristen Cox’s visit to MES.

.Mr. Mattingly noted his attendance at Fire and Rescue Appreciation Day, making remarks on behalf of the Board, Crab Feast for New Teachers, All Hands on Deck, BOE/BOCC joint meeting, First Day of School visits to Margaret Brent Middle School (MBMS), Oakville Elementary School (OES), Hollywood Elementary School (HES), and MES, Board of Education Retreat, Chaptico Classic for Alternatives for Youth, Bay District Volunteer Fire Department Dedication of New Fire Station, and Secretary Cox’s visit to MES.

.Dr. Raspa noted his attendance at the First Day of School visits to Spring Ridge Middle School (SRMS), GMHS, George Washington Carver Elementary School (GWCES), and Ridge Elementary School (RES), commenting on how great the opening day was, noting how clean, organized and orderly the schools are.  Dr. Raspa further commented that the students seemed happy to be back in school, and commended the entire staff, parents and grandparents for a job well done.
