LEONARDTOWN, MD – St. Mary’s County Public Schools announces the selection of Ms. Bernadette Scheetz, a mathematics teacher at Esperanza Middle School, as its 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year.
“Ms. Scheetz is the model of excellence in education who will represent our school system well,” said Dr. Michael J. Martirano, Superintendent of Schools. “Her passion for teaching shines through each and every day. She is an asset to Esperanza Middle School and our school system.”
Ms. Scheetz, who earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the Pennsylvania State University in 1994, and Master of Science degree in Education from Walden University in 2009, has served as a mathematics teacher at Esperanza Middle School since joining the school system in 2007. Prior to joining St. Mary’s County Public Schools, she also taught 3rd and 5th grade in North Carolina and kindergarten in Virginia.
“Ms. Scheetz has proven to be a consummate professional and leader in all areas,” wrote Ms. Donna Thorstensen, Instructional Resource Teacher, in her letter of support. “She is always positive, ready with ideas for how to reach students and help them be successful, both in the classroom and in the community. Ms. Scheetz’s knowledge of the mathematics curriculum and instructional strategies is enviable.”
All county Teacher of the Year representatives will be honored by the Maryland State Board of Education at a recognition luncheon held May 22, 2012, in Baltimore. Ms. Scheetz will represent St. Mary’s County Public Schools as a candidate for Maryland Teacher of the Year. This award will be announced at a banquet held in Baltimore in October.
The Maryland Teacher of the Year will be presented with several prizes, will speak at numerous conferences and events, and will act as an advisor to the Maryland State Department of Education. The Maryland Teacher of the Year is also a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year.
