LEONARDTOWN, MD - St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS) will celebrate Maryland Homegrown School Lunch Week during the week of September 17–21, 2012, by including locally-grown products in school lunches. Select schools will also showcase this event with outside display stations set up and manned by SMCPS staff, local farmers, and University of Maryland extension educators. Lessons on healthy eating and farming will be delivered in the classrooms. Showcased events will be held at Lettie Marshall Dent Elementary School on Friday, September 14, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and Piney Point Elementary School on Monday, September 17, from 9:30 am to 3:15 pm.
The program aims to bring more Maryland-grown products to school lunch rooms and to help educate students about where their food comes from, how it is produced, and the benefits of a healthy diet.
