Dating Violence Prevention Awareness Week

LEONARDTOWN, MD – St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS) will focus on educating students, parents and guardians on the prevention of dating violence and the community resources available to help students and their families with dating violence concerns. This year through an ongoing collaboration with the St. Mary’s County Commission for Women, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, St. Mary’s County Department of Aging and Human Services, and the Southern Maryland Center for Family Advocacy, student assemblies and a community forum will be held during the week of June 4, 2018. Students who participate in the sessions will be eligible for door prizes for their attendance and participation in the assemblies. Support of the door prizes was provided by the St. Maries Optimist, 7th District Optimist and SMECO. Mr. Bill Mitchell of the Clery Center will present information to students addressing risk factors and discuss warning signs associated with dating violence and ways to safely break away from a troubled relationship. The assemblies are scheduled at the following schools:
• Chopticon High School on June 5, 2018, at 12:30 p.m.
• Leonardtown High School on June 6, 2018, at 12:30 p.m.
• Great Mills High School on June 7, 2018, at 12:30 p.m.
A community forum will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Leonardtown High School, 23995 Point Lookout Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Mr. Mitchell will be presenting “When Dating Hurts”.
