Cathy Allen to Serve on the Maryland Advisory Council for Virtual Learning

LEONARDTOWN, MD – Mrs. Cathy Allen, Member of the Board of Education of St. Mary’s County, has been appointed to serve on the Maryland Advisory Council for Virtual Learning. The work of this council will help inform the direction of digital learning initiatives in the state of Maryland. Dr. Michael J. Martirano, Superintendent of Schools stated, “This is perfect timing for our school system considering our great emphasis on blended learning and alternative pathways for student success such as the on-line program with Apex Learning.”
Mrs. Allen is honored to have been selected as a participant on the council and stated, “Given the work in virtual learning we are pioneering in St. Mary’s County, I am thrilled to be able to be a part of this important effort to define the need and the expectations for our students and staff in the area of Virtual Learning. I believe my experience as a Board Member in St. Mary’s County will be an important part of the dialogue. I look forward to the challenge ahead.”
The Maryland Advisory Council for Virtual Learning was established in legislation passed during the General Assembly’s 2012 session. The advisory council is envisioned to be an ongoing effort to encourage and support the education of students in accordance with the national standards of online learning. The Council is comprised of twenty three members representing a variety of stakeholders including teachers, parents, business community, Boards of Education, superintendents, virtual learning providers, and others who are tasked with making recommendations to the General Assembly regarding all aspects of virtual learning. The appointment is for a three year term and approved by the Governor. Mrs. Allen will serve on the council to represent all Boards of Education in the state.
